传说秦嬴政消灭了六国，统一天下后，自号为始皇帝。他听有的儒生说，古代帝王必须亲自到泰山去举行封禅大典，才能算是有德行的君王。孟子也曾说过，一个新取得天下的帝王，必须上苍承认他的德行，接受了他的祭祀，才算是真命天子。秦始皇虽然缺德，却也想上苍承认他，于是带领着文武大臣，和一大群帮闲儒生来到泰山。他们先在泰山脚下停下来，商议封禅典礼如何举行。据儒生们说，所谓“封禅”，就是在泰山顶上祭天，在泰山脚下祭地。前者叫封，后者叫禅。然而又说，帝王上泰山顶上祭天最好不要坐车，非坐车不可，也要用蒲草裹起车轮子，以免辗坏山上的一草一木，才表示得出对泰山的敬重。这位暴君一听有如此条件，一气之下，不许儒生们参加祭典，自己带着亲信大臣们上了山。沿涂不好行车的地方，就砍树伐草，开山凿石。他心想：“我倒要看看泰山的神其奈我何?”
秦始皇一行人浩浩荡荡上了泰山，祭了天，还在山顶上立起一块大石碑。不久，天色突变，乌云滚滚，眼看就要下大雨。有人说泰山山神发怒的时候，就有乌云黑雨，山洪暴发，人畜都要冲走。秦始皇心中有鬼，以为得罪了山神，拔腿就往山下跑，手下一批人也紧跟而逃。这伙人刚刚跑到五松亭这个地方，只听得一声惊雷，瓢泼大雨就劈头盖脑地下来了。秦始皇养尊处优贯了，休说山洪，这场大雨就淋得站立不住，眼看要被冲下山去。正在危急时候，忽然发现路边有一棵大松树。这位不可一世的大皇帝，赶忙双膝跪在树前，两手死死抱住树干，口中念念有词，哀求树神保佑。雨下得快收得也快，不久就停了。秦始皇还真以为树神在护驾，于是就加封那棵救他的松树为“五大夫松”。
据《史记》记载，秦始皇登封泰山，中途遇雨，避于一棵大树之下，因大树护驾有功，遂封该树为“五大夫”爵位。谁知后世讹为五株。明代万历年间，古松被雷雨所毁。清雍正年间，钦差丁皂保奉敕重修泰山时，补植五株松树，现存二株，虬枝拳曲，苍劲古拙，自古被誉为“秦松挺秀”，为泰安古八景之一。五松亭旁有乾隆皇帝御制《咏五大夫松》摩刻。五大夫松以西有拦住山，山坡上有望人松，虬枝下伸，若躬身招手邀客，又名迎客松，为泰山重要标志物之一。西北是朝阳洞，一天然石穴深广如屋，南辟向阳，旧名迎阳、云阳。洞后壁有线刻元君像。
